Health Careers Collaborative Opportunity for NAO Membership
with the Association of American Medical Colleges
Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)
For a quarter of a century, the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) successfully empowered students underrepresented in the health professions, and provided the proper resources and tools for students to successfully act upon their dreams in specific health careers. In 2016, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) program expanded to include students interested in ALL areas of health care, not just within the medical or dental profession, to provide an interprofessional education focus.
Today, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (formerly SMDEP) www.shpep.org sponsored by the AAMC, serves as the free, six-week academic enrichment program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Eligible students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.
In our tradition of partnership, the NAO membership has been invited to partner with AAMC to share resource information about the SHPEP opportunity links and program brochure in your service regions, to better support and facilitate access to interested health career students who may benefit.
The AAMC encourages participants to apply and take the opportunity to join this FREE, summer enrichment program that is filled with countless career development opportunities. For more information, http://www.nationalahec.org/documents/1.19.2017/SHPEP_Brochure.2016.pdf
