My REHPS experience has been truly amazing. I did not really know what to expect when we first started. I have gained so much knowledge from all the health professionals and staff here in Bowdle. We were very well taken care of and Bowdle felt like home away from home. The first half of the experience was excellent. Immediately, we were able to jump in and observe and learn about the rural setting. Sturgis Regional Hospital was a very positive REHPS experience in all aspects. The health professionals and non-health professionals were welcoming and informative. All took time out of their busy schedules to make us feel wanted and to let us know exactly what it is they do for their organization. Every morning we attended what they call “huddle”, which is when all the health professionals caring for the patients meet to discuss each patient and plan their discharges. Sturgis Regional Health provided a rewarding Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students (REHPS) experience. As a future nurse practitioner (NP) it was beneficial to meet with multiple disciplines and ask questions which pertained to me in my future roll. Specifically, it was nice to know how different disciplines like to receive orders or how to make processes easier for both parties. The staff at Sturgis Regional were extremely accepting and were happy to visit and share with us. Providers asked engaging questions to make me think as a future provider. Getting to Bennett County Hospital & Nursing Home, Martin, SD for clinical, inter-professional experience, and having the opportunity to work with one of the finest providers I have ever met has been an amazing clinical exposure for me. Not knowing what to expect in underserved community in rural South Dakota, my first 2 –weeks at the hospital has been eye opening and rewarding. The hospital is located on the northeast side of town and is connected to the long term care unit with the clinic just a few steps away. My first day of experience began early in the morning.
