2021 REHPS Lillian Schulte

I started my experience in Redfield on June 1st. I had drove in the night before, got my key from the nurses’ station, and unpacked some of my belongings into the church parsonage house that I would be living in during my stay. My first impressions of the town were that it was small but not very different from the town I had grown up. The hospital was conveniently connected to both the clinic and the pharmacy which was another great bonus. The first week of my experience I was able to work with both Dr. Waldner and Dr. Owens,…

2021 REHPS Ashton Smith

My time at the Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston, SD, gave me a true perspective of rural healthcare. The staff made me feel welcome and worked to provide me with a variety of experiences and opportunities to learn. I spent most of my time in the pharmacy where I was able to pull medications, restock the pixis, bill medication orders, along with other duties of a pharmacist. I was also able to spend time in other disciplines and get a snapshot of their contribution to the healthcare team. During my 3-week experience, I was fortunate to observe operating room…

REHPS 2020 Austin Venard

As a medical laboratory science student, and being from the area, my placement in Martin was an exceptional experience. The first week of the program at Bennett County Hospital the staff threw me right in the action. I felt like I was welcome, as the staff went out of their way to show me all aspects of rural healthcare. The majority of my time was spent inside the lab, but I was also able to meet with the emergency room staff and Emergency Medical Technicians. What surprised me the most was how busy the emergency room was for how rural…

REHPS 2020 Shannon Katz

I feel so privileged to have been selected to participate in the REHPS program in Huron, SD at the Huron Regional Medical Center. From the outstanding community teamwork throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to the friendly smiles exchanged between all HRMC staff, partaking in the REHPS experience has nothing but exceeded my expectations. Going into the start of this experience I was not sure what to anticipate due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the influx of positive COVID cases Beadle county had been experiencing. I did not want to put myself at risk of being exposed. However, being a healthcare professional…

REHPS 2020 Julianna Certa-Werner

I am so grateful for the opportunity to be accepted into, and participate in the Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students program at the Huron Region Medical Center!  I gained wonderful learning experiences and received fond memories that will help guide my future career choices.  The big question people asked me throughout this experience was, “You’re from Superior, Wisconsin!  That is pretty far away, so how’d you end up here?” The internship was a long way from home, but I was thrilled to learn about this opportunity when Cheri Buffington came to our class at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell…

REHPS 2020 Isis Insua

During my four-week experience in Huron at Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC), I was given the opportunity to shadow all different kinds of departments throughout the hospital (some that wouldn’t have even crossed my mind as a nurse!). I believe that one of the most important ideals that I got out of this experience is how vital interprofessional care is. One cannot do everything by themselves, healthcare is a team sport. Everyone needs to come together from all different types of backgrounds to perform the highest quality of care. And that is exactly what went down at HRMC. Everyone was…

REHPS 2020 Jacob Steckelberg

Prior to the REHPS program , I would have never imagined the variety of experiences I would be able to have at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin, South Dakota. In fact, I had never even been to Martin before, nor had I ever worked in a hospital pharmacy.  Throughout my REHPS experience, I worked closely with Desiree Moreland, the hospital’s pharmacist. She went out of her way to set up different shadowing opportunities to help make my time in Martin as worthwhile as possible. During my first week in Martin, I spent much of my time in the pharmacy….
