2019 REHPS Kim Velk

Well the first week has come to a close, and I have to admit I could not have asked for a better start to my REHPS experience. Lauren and I met our host family, Lynn and Mike Buck, for the first time. Mike used to work for the telephone company and Lynn worked in radiology at the hospital. They have a beautiful home and we have the entire basement to ourselves. My first day in the clinic was great! I met my preceptor Carrie Fuhrer PA-C, as well as the rest of the clinic staff including Deb, Tracy, and Ryan….

2019 REHPS Danielle Miller

The first two weeks of my REHPS experience have been invaluable to me. I have been exposed to several cultures in and around Martin, and seeing more severe poverty than I have ever seen elsewhere. I have been getting some hands-on procedural experience that I haven’t gotten the chance to before. It feels like we’ve seen everything – there has been a trauma case, a drug overdose, elderly falls, and car accidents just in the short time we have been present. The community has taken my partner and I into their arms, and I have felt welcomed and valued here….

2019 REHPS Sarah Jungers

Before this experience I didn’t know where Martin, SD, was or what I would all experience in my short time. Martin sits between two reservations, Pine Ridge and Rosebud, and has a population around 1,100 people. The Bennett County Health System is made up of a clinic, hospital, emergency room, and nursing home that are all interconnected. Dani and I have been welcomed into the facility and community with open arms. I have learned so much about the community and healthcare within the past two weeks. I have spent a majority of my time working in retail pharmacy, so I…

2019 REHPS Ryan Hall

My two weeks in Platte, SD have been phenomenal so far. During my first two weeks at the hospital I have been exposed to numerous fields of rural healthcare. A majority of my time has been in the lab, but I have also experienced physical therapy and been able to listen, as well as help with exercises with elderly ladies. These ladies are hilarious and it makes the experience that much more enjoyable. I have also spent time with a PA, CNP, ER nurses, and the dentist. I have been able to see multiple procedures with each of them. It…

I’ve been in Burke SD for a little over a week so far and I’m enjoying my time here. The people in the community have been welcoming and nice. I’ve spent the majority of the time in the clinic which has been interesting to see how busy it is for a small community. I have spent some time in pharmacy, physical therapy, and lab. These experiences have helped me understand what goes into the total care of patients. My favorite experience so far is taking care of patients in the critical access ER. I have been an ER nurse for…

Week one of my internship was great!  The first day consisted of getting shown around the new hospital and introduced to everyone.  This was more of just telling everyone that Michael and I were here since I am originally from Burke and he has done hours for school here before.  The first week I spent most of my time in the pharmacy relearning the system and understanding the hospital side of pharmacy in a small town.  A couple of the mornings I got to observe hospital rounds with the providers on staff, and on Thursday got to spend some time…

2019 REHPS Rachel Bock

My first week in Parkston has been a welcoming one. I have split my time between two locations: Our Home Inc. and Avera St. Benedict Hospital and Clinic. At both locations, I already feel at home. At Our Home, I have spent time with youth who are sexual abuse survivors, sexually aggressive, and/or struggling with addiction. I have been able to sit in on treatment planning sessions, emergency management trainings, group therapy sessions, and staff meetings. At Avera, I continued to expand my own behavioral health understanding by participating in two music therapy sessions at the nursing home. I also…

Through the REHPS program I had the opportunity to see the Sturgis Regional Hospital and Clinic from a new perspective. I am originally from Sturgis, SD but with the help of this program I really appreciated the chance to get a inside look at how rural hospitals/clinics function.  Much of my time was spent working with a family practice physician assistant in the clinic. With the aging population, many of the patients had complex comorbidities with multiple medical problems. I was able to see how the patients were managed with medications as well as the extensive lab, medical imaging, and…

I had the opportunity to spend 4 weeks at the Sturgis Regional Hospital before beginning the REHPS program. All of my time during these 4 weeks was spent following an occupational therapist, however I had the opportunity to meet a variety of other professionals during this time. During my first two weeks in the REHPS program I have had the opportunities to sit down with some of these professionals and really understand what their role is at the hospital. I have spent time understanding the roles of some of the administration, a discharge planner, PAs in the emergency room, lab,…

From the moment I arrived in Redfield, everyone was extremely welcoming and excited to meet us. All of my past pharmacy experience has been in the community setting at an independent pharmacy. I was eager to experience a new environment. One of the first things I noticed was how close all of the health care buildings were located. The city of Redfield has one building that contains the Community Memorial Hospital, Community Memorial Clinic, Physical Therapy, and independent Randall Pharmacy all within one building. This greatly increases the convenience for providers who are seeing patients in the clinic and hospital…
