The first week of my REHPS experience is going well! I had the opportunity to meet people from all different areas of the facility, tour Miller, and spent time with the physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and nursing departments. I was impressed with how well everyone knows each other and the ease of communicating between different departments. In this rural setting, employees tend to carry several responsibilities which allows for some variety that you might not see in a different setting. The hospital Fall River Health Services is integral to the health and welfare of the Hot Springs community. The people of the town are very invested in the hospital. The hospital runs as a 25 bed critical access hospital, 24/7 emergency room, “7 Sisters” which is a 48 bed nursing home and a walk-in clinic offering a menagerie of health services. As a medical lab student assigned to Huron Regional Medical Center I have had a wonderful experience these past three weeks which have included moments spent in Lab, Surgery, ICU and ER nursing and many more places. My time at the Huron Regional Medical Center has been well spent, getting a great look at the interprofessional work that goes into running a hospital. I have had the opportunity to observe cardiac rehab, emergency room care, home health care, occupational therapy, and minor surgical procedures. To see the inner workings of the health care system from so many different viewpoints has been a truly enriching experience. The REHPS program has had a significantly positive impact on my physical therapy clinical rotation, and I am thankful for this unique opportunity.

My time at Fall Rivers Health Services in REHPS would be considered fulfilling if expectations are met with experiences to fill out the former. I suspected I would get to follow along practitioners carrying out their specialty in a discrete fashion, working on their piece of the jigsaw puzzle regarding a patient’s health profile. During my first two weeks in Parkston, SD  I have spent time working with the various disciplines that a rural healthcare facility can offer but more importantly, I have felt welcomed and included by the hospital and community. It’s hard to believe my first week at Coteau Des Prairies hospital is already over! This week has been a whirlwind in the best way possible. Starting on Monday I was greeted by a large group of the staff at the hospital with breakfast. We got to go around and introduce ourselves and learn about who works where. It was so cool to see how everyone plays a role in each part of the hospital instead of having set specialties like in the big hospitals. My first week at Sisseton has been a wonderful experience so far. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly and have made this transition an easy one. Being in a rural location really creates a sense of community within the facility and each department gets along with one another. Week two: Being in a small hospital has allowed me to participate in many experiences that occur within the hospital.
