2019 REHPS Ashley Heine

During my first two weeks in the REHPs program, I have had an incredible learning experience in Winner at Winner Regional Healthcare Center (WRHC). I come from the small town of Wynot, Nebraska and am very interested in the workings of a rural hospital such as WRHC. As an occupational therapy student on my first level II clinical rotation, I am spending 75% of my time with occupational therapy and approximately 25% of my time observing other disciplines. Thus, I have observed a total knee arthroplasty and a cesarean section, as well as rounding with Dr. Taylor on the inpatients,…

The last two weeks in Winner have been some of the most informative weeks of my education thus far.  Upon arrival, everyone in the healthcare team made sure to welcome me into the community.  I feel as though I have come to understand the importance of interdisciplinary communication through my time in Winner.  All of the members of the healthcare team communicate with one another frequently throughout the day to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.  Every day is a new day in rural healthcare, and I am grateful that I have been able to see many of…

My first two weeks in Chamberlain have been so fun! We started our experience by getting accustomed to the hospital, grabbing lunch at a local restaurant, getting a small tour of the town and getting settled into our housing. I have been to Chamberlain many times before but during my first day I saw it in a new light because the river had severely flooded. We had seen people volunteering to sandbag local businesses which showed how close this community was.   I have gotten to experience so much of the hospital in the first two weeks here as well….

The last two weeks in the REHPS experience has been a whirlwind in the best way! I had never been to Chamberlain before this experience, aside from driving through on my way to the western side of the state. Needless to say, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was looking forward to learning about the hospital and the surrounding area. My first day in Chamberlain was filled with a tour of the hospital and town, complete with a meal at the Smoking Mule, in case it flooded in the near future – a very real possibility with the…

My first two weeks in Platte, South Dakota have been filled with adventure both in the clinic and the community. I was warmly welcomed by my host family who has graciously provided meals, adventures, and an apartment that was filled with smells of freshly baked banana bread upon our arrival. The providers, staff, and patients in the clinic have also been welcoming. They have been eager to educate and happy to help with any questions I may have. My experience in Platte has supplemented my academic learning in the classroom. For example, Dr. Bentz has asked me for input in…

Prior to the start of the REHPS program in Bowdle, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  Upon arrival, Christian and I were welcomed by all members within the facility.  All the employees were very personable and wanted to know about our upbringing and interests.  They were very encouraging and open to showing us new things within the rural health care setting.  Having mostly retail pharmacy experience, being within a hospital/clinic setting was new to me.  Within the first two weeks, I was able to see different procedures and how other healthcare professionals handle certain situations. Within the first two weeks,…

My REHPS experience so far has been fantastic! Britton, SD has welcomed us into their community with open arms. On day 1, they welcomed us to the hospital with a welcome basket full of information on local businesses and town gatherings we could attend. We got a tour of the hospital and clinic where many smiling faces told us about how they each uniquely contributed to the small community. Emily and I get to start every morning off by having breakfast with the residents in the Assisted Living. It has been a wonderful experience to get to know them and…

My first week in Britton has been a very eye-opening experience that has showed me what it is like to work as a practitioner in a rural area. I have had the chance to work in the clinic, hospital, and emergency room, and even had the chance to go on an ambulance ride. I have learned that being in a rural area presents with challenges in providing healthcare. One of the biggest challenges is getting patients to a larger facility in the case of an emergency. One patient I saw needed to be transported to a facility 60 miles away…

I am pleased to say that I have enjoyed my first two weeks in Bowdle, SD. During the first two weeks, I have had an opportunity to experience many different aspects of rural healthcare. I have spent time with radiology, learning some of the details involved with taking X-rays and performing CT scans. I have also had an opportunity to spend some time with an ultrasound technician. I also spent an afternoon with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology. These experiences have given me an opportunity to see healthcare professions that I don’t see on a day to day…
