REHPS 2020 Kirstyn Polasky

My time in Martin, SD has been amazing. I got to see and assist with procedures that, as a typical pharmacy student, I would never get to experience. When I arrived in Bennett County, I was unsure of how my talents would be of benefit to the facility and how much I would learn there. Upon my first day, I quickly realized how hands-on my experience would be. Desiree, a pharmacist for Bennett County, set me up with each health domain in order for the most comprehensive experience as possible. I observed a wheelchair fitting with physical therapy, went on…

REHPS 2020 Shelby Rockafellow

During our didactic year of PA school, we had a meeting about the Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students (REHPS) and after that I knew it was something I was interested in doing. Being from a small community in South Dakota I know how important it is the serve the rural communities throughout the state and this program gives students great opportunity to learn more about rural communities and the adaptations they must go through to treat their patients with limited resources.  Originally I was scheduled to go to Chamberlin, SD however with that taking place in the midst of…

2020 REHPS Ethan Case

What a great 3 weeks.  My time in Martin, SD was plum full of new experiences in a unique hospital. Going to a new hospital and trying to see as much as you can, without feeling invasive or annoying to some sounds like it could be difficult. I felt so accepted right off the bat and never felt as though I was in the way or a nuisance. The pharmacist, Desiree Moreland, was such a great preceptor. She set up times for me to see essentially everything in the hospital. Included in some of my experiences in the hospital outside…

2020 REHPS Bethany Zeug

Over the past 4 weeks at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland, SD, I have learned a great deal and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I have gained valuable new experiences in my own field of pharmacy, as well as new interprofessional and community experiences. This opportunity presented a lot of firsts for me in pharmacy. This has been my first exposure to hospital pharmacy as well as a more rural retail setting than I have worked in previously. I got an introduction to operating a Pyxis MedStation, practiced looking at medication orders, and learned about patient discharge counseling….

The experience with the REHPS program in Scotland, SD for one month really was an all-encompassing experience. It was different from other clinical experiences in that I was able to actually follow and participate with other disciplines and it has helped me view the entirety of the patient’s experience. It was easy to navigate between professions because all of the departments are connected within the same building, as many rural facilities are. Physical therapy, the hospital, clinic, pharmacy and even an elderly apartment building were all connected.               One thing I loved about the experience was that within the…

2020 REHPS James Pischke

The first I heard of the Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students (REHPS) program was in the middle of my first year of medical school as we were discussing different options for how we could spend our summer break. Honestly, after that one meeting I didn’t have much of an idea of what I would actually be doing, but it sounded like a pretty interesting program so I applied and looking back on the last 3 weeks I’m glad that I did. Originally after being accepted the plan was for me to participate in Parkston, SD for 4 weeks, however,…

Week 1: So far, my experience has been incredible at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital. Kim and I moved in on Sunday evening with a host family, Mike and Lynn Buck. Everything is fully furnished and they are very kind and inviting. She is a great cook! The hospital is small & close-knit—it is neat to see how all of the departments work together and collaborate to provide the best care possible to their patients. There was a Healthcare Appreciation Supper on the very first night we were here (because of Hospital Week), so we were able to meet some of the…
